 A teacher should be a leader with a friendly and pleasant approach, but be the disciplinarian when it is called for. This will also help the children learn positive things about school and themselves. Small children primarily learn by example. So if you, as a teacher set a good example then the children will know how to conduct themselves. It will also help them if in every lesson the information is explained then an example is given.
A teacher should also take an active role in the school and the community. When a teacher participates in school functions it is noticed throughout the community. When a teacher has a role in a fall festival, for instance, the parents see what kind of an instructor she/he is. She shows her school pride and dedication to her job as a teacher. It also helps you to earn respect throughout the community. If you participate in Toys for Tots at Christmas and go hunt Easter eggs with the elderly then it says that you have character and compassion for others. All of these things are important when you want to hold the future of young minds in your hands.
I have developed a definition of an effective teacher. I like what a little boy said when asked what a good teacher is. He told me that a good teacher is somebody to warm your heart by. I feel what he meant by this is that a teacher is somebody who shows they care about their students. It is also somebody who is willing to go that extra mile just to reach the one child that needs you. I also feel that is a child gets a good teacher in their first years of schooling, then they are more apt to enjoy and be excited about going to school.
I look forward to teaching and helping the children learn in every way. I want a student to leave my classes with a love first for themselves and their intelligence, but also with a love and a passion for learning. If they master these things at an early age then the growing up stages that follow will be a lot easier.
